VIA Chapter III — Fragment Matrix

Rows are the start checkpoint, columns the end. A cell lists every route that rides that fragment directly (no other checkpoint in between), with the fragment's distance, climb and ferry-crossing count — so cells with several routes are the same stretch, directly comparable. ⚠ flags a fragment containing a ferry with very restricted service (hover the entry for which ferry and why). Opposite directions sit in mirror cells across the diagonal (⇄ marks a cell whose mirror is also ridden).

How it's computed — each route's track is matched against the official checkpoints (nearest track point within 2.5 km, the same rule as the map's timeline); consecutive matches give the route's checkpoint sequence, and only consecutive pairs count as a fragment. Directness is judged on the full sequence (Start and gates I–IV included), but only Refuge + V–XVI + Finish rows are shown: Anisa, Anisa Alt and the Adventure route pass the Refuge between gates II and IV, so their Refuge legs touch checkpoints outside this window and don't produce a cell here. The Adventure reference route never passes V at all (it runs IV → X directly). Distances include any ferry crossings inside the fragment. Climb: hand-built routes are summed straight from their track elevation with a 10 m noise threshold (their data is clean — display and hi-res files agree within ~0.1% on verified stretches). The generated routes' ORS elevation carries heavy SRTM jitter in fjord terrain (a plain sum reads ~2× the true climb), so those tracks alone are denoised first — 100 m resample, 900 m rolling median — then summed with the same threshold. Calibrated on a road both types ride (Borgund→Sognefjellet): generated then agrees with the untouched hand-built figure within ~2%, so climb numbers are comparable across the matrix. They will still read lower than ORS's own inflated totals shown on the map viewer.

Ferries — ⛴ counts the crossings inside each fragment, from ferries.json. Routes that dataset knows by name match by label (as on the map); the two spliced Anisa alternates aren't listed there, so their ferries are matched geometrically (ferry position on or beside the track at a crossing-sized jump). ⚠ means the fragment includes a ferry with very restricted service: ≤6 sailings a day, sailings 90+ minutes apart, or a daily operating window of 12 hours or less — hover the route's entry to see the ferry, its hours, and the reason. Crossings before the Refuge/V window (e.g. Moss–Horten, the Danish crossings) belong to earlier legs and aren't shown here.
